Heather Gant's
Pennine Way Diary Day 15 |
Wednesday 17th May 2006 Day 15 We all woke up this morning very tired and stiff of leg after the rigours of yesterday, Peter was up early to have an inspection of the wet boots but everything was OK and they had dried well in the hotels boiler room. We indulged in a late breakfast as today was a short day and set off to retrace our weary steps from yesterday evening to make sure we did not miss any of the Pennine Way. I know I am a stickler for doing it by the book but Peter J. is even worse. We soon climbed up on to Hadrian's Wall. It was cloudy and mild and there were a lot more people around mostly doing the recently opened Hadrian's Wall long distance footpath from Carlisle to Wallsend – 80 miles. The wall is at its best in these parts very impressive but in other places it has almost gone as over the years the s tone has been taken to build farmhouses and roads. When you touch the stone it is a weird feeling to think that a Roman soldier touched the same stone two thousand years ago.
We had no pack up today as we did not have the energy last night to get it sorted. We sat in the picnic ground watching people munch away while we scratched around with a few dried apricots and midget gems. It may have been a short walk miles wise but the walking was quite hard as the wall follows the contours there are a lot of steep ascents and descents but the views were fantastic on both sides of the wall. Eventually after much slow walking we arrived at Saughy Rigg Farm. Here another surprise awaited us as the r ooms we had booked were unavailable due to plumbing problems and we were to be transported to a farm up the road for the night. Gibbs Hill was OK and we were picked up later to return to Saughy Rigg for our evening meal with free bottle of wine. A satisfactory end to the day.
