Heather Gant's Pennine Way Diary
Day 17

Friday 19th May 2006 Day 17
Bellingham to Byrness 15.9 miles

After plenty of pain killers and the purchase of an ankle support from the local chemist w e set out for Byrness. It was fine as we set out stopping off at the local shops for buns and chocolate. My rucksack had been sent on by taxi so Peter was carrying everything we needed for the day.

The weather was fine at the start but as we climbed it started to drizzle. It was hard going through strength sapping bogs, lots of trees and a long walk down a forest track to finish with. We ate our lunch sheltered under the trees. The 16 mile walk took a long 9 hours because I could not walk too fast.

Byrness was built for the forestry workers and is just a few building strung out along the main road. Our B & B was grim with no warm welcome. There is no competition in this neck of the woods. There was no heating , the bed was lumpy and the meal that was served up was awful. It was just like Faulty Towers. We retired to our rooms at 9 pm but the TV didn’t work so went to sleep. I think everyone agreed that this was our bad day on the Pennine Way.
