Heather Gant's Pennine Way Diary
Day 5

Sunday 7th May Day 5
Ponden to East Marton 14.3 miles

Today was the first time we had woken up to cloudy skies. It must be the weekend!!!!! Plenty of choice at breakfast with yoghurt, apricots prunes and poached eggs. On the map it looked quite an easy days walking but I think we were all feeling tired at this stage as we hadn’t walked ourselves fit yet.

It was a steep accent from Ponden but good views looking back to the reservoir and then a moorland crossing over Ickornshaw Moor. We had spotted a pub at Cowling on the map but when we arrived it turned out to be a furniture store. This meant another few miles before lunch at the pretty village of Lothersdale. The Hare and Hounds turned out to be an excellent pub and we spent 11/2 hours enjoying sandwiches, chips and beer.

The Hare and Hounds at Lothersdale

It was raining now as we set off on our last lap of the day. Pinhaw Beacon at 650 metres is the highest point of the days walk and on a clear day the dales can be seen in the distance. But not today. Pat and Pete were camping at East Marton and we met them near Thornton in Craven. There were no seats in the village so all six of us sat resting in the gutter drinking water. A load of old tramps.

The double-decker bridge at East Marton

After our long lunch we did not arrive at East Marton until nearly 6 o clock after walking along the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool canal. The B and B turned out to be in a posh bungalow and the lady was not keen on dirt. We arrived a bit damp so we had to get our muddy clothes off in the garage next to the Mercedes. I think she was in the wrong business as she described walkers as “dirty things “ The rooms were very comfortable though and we enjoyed a lovely bath. It is surprising how quickly you recover after a cup of tea, a sit down and a hot bath .We had a great evening in the local pub with Pete and Pat swapping stories and telling jokes. Pete is a great story teller. The meal was good and we laughed a lot. Then off to bed for a good sleep.
