Introduction My name is Heather, I’m 55 years old and have
been married to Peter for 33 years. Both our sons have left home. In 2005 a plan was put into place to walk the Pennine Way in May 2006. At first it was just going to be the two of us, but after mentioning our plans in a Christmas card to our friends Pete and Eirlys they were straight on the telephone asking to accompany us on the walk. In January I started to book the overnight stops thinking that four people would be more difficult to find beds for but it was surprisingly straightforward with the only problem being Uswayford Farm being fully booked. From January onward we started walking as much as possible both locally and in the Peak District. We did a lot of circular day walks which incorporated the first two days of the Pennine Way. These walks proved invaluable especially making sure we did not take the wrong turn at Bleaklow Head which so many people seem to do. I read as many of the journals as possible gleaning much information from these. We used the three Harvey strip maps and the Cicerone guide along with our friends GPS. This was used mainly for measuring distance and height and for placing ourselves on the map. My journal has been written as a record of the walk from a very personal point of view but hopefully some people may find some useful information within.
